Birmingham AIDS Outreach

The mission of Birmingham AIDS Outreach (BAO) is to enhance the quality of life for people and families living with HIV/AIDS and to prevent further spread of the disease through age appropriate prevention education programs. BAO was the first nonprofit organization dedicated to providing HIV/AIDS prevention education and services for persons living with HIV/AIDS in the state of Alabama and the Birmingham/Jefferson County area. BAO has 25 years of progressively growing skills and experience in the field of HIV/AIDS prevention education and essential services. All programs at BAO are offered free of charge and include: • Basic Support Services: o Food bank/nutritional supplements o Clothes and household items closet o Transportation: for medical, psychosocial and daily living needs o Medication assistance and medical items o GED classes o Personal hygiene supplies: toilet paper, shampoo, cleaning products, etc. o Case management and referrals to housing and other un-met needs o Pet food program • Emotional Support Services: o Counseling for individuals, couples, and families infected and/or affected by HIV by a licensed professional counselor. Support Groups: regular weekly meetings for HIV+ persons o Friends & Family Night: monthly dinner/social for consumers, friends and families o Legal Services • Educational Services: o (2.5) HIV educators on staff o Education: HIV 101 presentations, schools, health fairs, educational seminars, educational topics, prison system o HIV testing: at BAO, local schools, health fairs, street outreach, bar outreach, community outreach o Brother to Brother/EmPowerment: HIV prevention education for men, o Pre and Posttest Education: education for HIV+ persons about healthier lifestyles, with HIV and information to prevent HIV re-infection and infection of partners o The Youth Advisory Council (YAC): YAC targets adolescents with peer HIV prevention messages in Alabama classrooms with high risk populations • BAO staff credentials: o Licensed Social Worker in the State of Alabama, (3) o Licensed Professional Therapist in the State of Alabama, (2) o Alabama Alcohol and Drug Abuse Association, Certified Addiction Counselor, (1) o Licensed Attorney with the State of Alabama, (2)
