Back-To-School Backpack Drive
Every year HOB puts on a Back-To-School Backpack Drive for families and students in need. Volunteers are asked to donate backpacks stuffed with schools supplies that gets distributed to underserved, homeless and at-risk children in Greater Birmingham.
This year Hands On Birmingham is streamlining its backpack donation process by having donors and volunteers deliver directly to our partner agencies.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Where do the backpacks go? Backpacks go to agencies such as, YWCA, Salvation Army, Pathways Shelter, Gateway, Jessie's Place, Children's Village, The Kings Ranch, Hannah Home, Safehouse, AIDS Alabama and Birmingham AIDS Outreach.
How do I know what is "grade appropriate"? In most stores a kiosk will be located at the front entrance. Pick up a supply list for whichever grade level you choose and fill the backpack accordingly. Donated backpacks should consist of elementary/middle school supplies OR high school
Does it matter if the backpacks are gender specific? ALL backpacks should be gender neutral and character-free. Most city schools discourage students from carrying backpacks and school supplies that have characters (Mickey Mouse, Hello Kitty, etc.). Please be sure that all backpacks and supplies are clear or mesh and gender neutral colors (red, orange, blue, purple, yellow, black, gray, green).
What if the store I'm purchasing supplies from doesn't have supply lists? If you can't locate a supply list please consider filling the backpack with the following: Loose leaf paper, notebooks, binders, folders, pens, pencils, highlighters, markers, crayons, construction paper and erasers.
We are proud to partner with Success By 6 to help provide as many children with tools for success as they start a new school year!
