Garden Explorations Summer Camp Counselors for Birmingham Botanical Gardens

Counselors needed to assist in this week long summer camp Garden Explorations is a free program developed by the Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens for elementary children ages 6 – 12 enrolled in Birmingham’s Parks and Recreation Board Centers’ summer camps. This program introduces the basics of gardening, incorporates components of outdoor education and emphasizes the Botanical Gardens as an education resource. Garden Explorations implements a distinct curriculum with activities, games, and tours of the Alabama Woodlands, Crepe Myrtle Grove and Bruno Vegetable Garden. This summer we will work with children from all parts of Birmingham. They will learn about the creation of soil and its components, propagate plants and create their own container garden to care for this summer. Through these interactive activities we hope to instill a lasting appreciation for the Botanical Gardens, gardening and what makes Nature so interesting and valuable to everyone, including our urban children. Please contact Alice Moore for more information and to volunteer: amoore@bbgardens.org

Road to Recovery

One of the biggest barriers to cancer care is transportation, because even the best treatment cannot work if a patient is unable to get there... That is why the American Cancer Society's Road to Recovery program provides patients with free rides to/from their cancer-related treatments. For those who cannot drive themselves or have no other means of getting to treatment, volunteers donate their spare time and the use of their personal vehicle to give patients a much-needed ride. And we need your help! Every volunteer makes a difference and every driver has what it takes to help save lives. Prior to driving, volunteers will complete a short, online training and criminal/driving record background check.

Quick-Fix Administration Assistant

Shelby Humane supports our community in many ways. Our Quick Fix program provides low cost spay/neuter procedures in collaboration with veterinarians throughout the Birmingham area. It is one of the most important things we do because spay/neuter programs can significantly reduce the severe animal overpopulation problem in Alabama. We need volunteers to help with client communication and simple data entry. It will involve answering questions from the public, scheduling surgeries with our veterinarian partners, and making reminder calls to clients before their scheduled appointment. The work is not difficult but very important to our program. Our staff will teach everything you need to know. The number of hours you volunteer is completely up to you but having regular days and times will help us plan our day. Please consider helping us build a program that really does save lives.
